The OpEd: Schultz: Obama needs to finish the job

Posted on Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH and the Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel discuss whether Senate Democrats will be able to pass a bill before the August recess to help the unemployed who have exhausted their 99 weeks of benefits.

Give me your thoughts...

comments Comments:

The Republicans don't give a damn about he middle class or the unemployed. The Republicans really don't give a damn about the deficit either, they are just politicizing it. They are fake fiscal hawks & using the issue like a political football.
The Republican Party has a mission: TO OBSTRUCT & DESTROY THE ECONOMY UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA'S WATCH!
The Republicans believe if your lives & the economy is bad that you will vote Republican in the next election. The conservative leadership is doing everything they can to cause failure & hardship so they can get back in power!

Posted by M, Fargo

The Republican Party is on a mission to Obstruct so they can stop President Obama from fixing the economy. The conservatives are using the filibuster to stop the Democratic Party from Governing.
The Republicans have offered no new ideas or solutions. All they have are the same policies & philosophies that cause the mess in the first place.

Yes Ed Schultz,

Senate Democrats should be able to pass a bill before the August recess to Help unemployed who exhausted their 99 weeks of benefits.

Businesses, Companies, & Employers should be penalized for shipping jobs overseas. I have a college education but every job I've applied to either got filled from within (internally), CFO,
President of the company, or other management decided not to fill the position to save money, or too many HUNDREDS & THOUSANDS of unemployed people are applying for the same job.

I send email and/or phone call the companies to inquiry about the status of my application (and/or resume) and I get no answer or job is filled or decided not to fill. Job Fairs are a joke. Most people leave disguised. I have tried and will continue too. Ed, Your the People's Advocate :-)!!! Thank you
so much for being so VOCAL to OUR CAUSE. I always write to all my local, Washington DC, and other States politicians to let them know.

Please EXTEND FOR THE 99 Weekers. After End of Sept. I will be a 99 Weekers. Senators should still be in session in August till they pass 99 Weekers Exhausted Unemployment. Private Businesses, Companies, & Employers are not posting enough jobs I LOOK every day. I'm lucky to apply to 1-2 job openings a weeks. I will send this email & video link to ALL the politicians that I normally do. THANKS ED! LOVE YA!

They are UN-AMERICAN, UN-PATRIOTIC, period. And when these politicians work against the American People, well THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE, UN-AMERICAN! (in both parties)

Cities, AND individuals need to YANK THEIR money from these big banks. PULL IT OUT! Put it in your community banks.

Katrina IS RIGHT! SHE IS GREAT!

Posted by Norman, Washington

One more thing, wait til you have 4 MILLION MORE FORECLOSURES in this country. OBAMA BETTER START LOOKING at his HAM Program; it is FAILING MISERABLY!

The big banks DO NOT want to modify mortgages, they go through motions, then FORECLOSE and re stock THEIR COFFERS!

Obama, Inc., and Dems you better pay attention to this, you talk about the other "shoe dropping", well; I suspect you ain't seen anything yet!

WAKE UP AND PAY ATTENTION!

Posted by Norman, Washington

If we as not just Progressive Americans, but as Americans want real change & to fix the economic mess that President Obama is fixing we need to get motivated & make sure the Obstructionist Republicans don't get back in power.
The Democratic Leadership needs to Unite the Party & go on the offensive. The Democratic Party needs to NOT BE AFRAID to say it like it is. They need to SAY IT & SAY IT LOUDLY & OFTEN that the Republican mission is to OBSTRUCT & do everything they can to keep the ECONOMY from recovering. The Republicans want a bad economy under President Obamas watch. The Republicans want a high unemployment rate under Democratic Leadership. The Republican are doing everything they can to stop President Obama & the Democratic Party from Governing. They are trying to Stop Change & Progress so they can get back in power. That is the message that the Democrats need to go on the offensive with & stop worrying about hurting their colleagues feelings. It is the Truth so Expose the Republicans & their Playbook for the Obstructionists that they are. Saying they want Obama to fail is going to easy on them. THE REPUBLICANS WANT AMERICA TO FAIL, that is the truth! The REPUBLICAN PARTY is UN-AMERICAN! The Republican Party has No ideas or solutions, they just want American Failure while President Obama is President.

Posted by M, Fargo

M
I agree with th you on the Republicans strategy in as much as they DO want to destroy our economy. WHY is Obama not getting out their and playing HARDBALL? We have I believe a couple of TRILLION IN BUSH TAX CUTS EXPIRING, it worries me tremendously that Obama is going to NOT allow them to expire. In my opinion he ought to allow them to expire AND increase the rate on the upper 5%!

Also, very concerned he is not doing MORE to MAKE THE BIG BANKS loan to both small business and individuals.

Posted by Norman, Washington

Lastly, I really believe ANY POLITICAL OBSTRUCTIONISTS need to be labelled UN-AMERICAN, AND UN-PATRIOTIC!

Just as the Tea Party is terribly worried when they get labelled as RACISTS - well in my opinion, if you M/M Representative and Senator are entrusted to make the lives of the American People better and you cast votes that cause DEATH, DESTRUCTION, HARDSHIP, HOMELESSNESS, UNEMPLOYMENT, and FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN TO GO HUNGRY you are the lowest of the low, and YOU ARE
UN-AMERICAN!

Posted by Norman, Washington

I agree with you Norman about the tax cuts & Big Banks sitting on a pile of money. I have been blogging that Obama needed to play hardball throughout the Health Care Debate. I was his biggest critic. I have seen more of it what I have been begging for in his second term starting with the CSPAN live camera a$$ kicking in the Republican House. I believe that President Obama can't do it alone. It will take a united effort by the Democrats, even the ones in the Red States. I suggest pressuring your local legislators. I believe we need to replace the Corporate Democrats with Progressive Democrats in our local primaries. We need to show President Obama in the polls & when it comes time to vote that we have is back when he gets after it. We need 60 Democratic votes to get it done. I trust President Obama, I just don't trust the Corporate Ben Nelson type in the Democratic Party. What do you suggest Norman?

Posted by M, Fargo

Norman you are spot on about labeling the Obstructionist Republicans & any Democrat who joins their Obstruction for their bad behavior (Obstruction) as: UN-AMERICAN, AND UN-PATRIOTIC!
I believe the Democratic Leadership needs to stop being so nice & come out and say it loudly: UN-AMERICAN, AND UN-PATRIOTIC!
It is time for the Democrats to energize & motivate the base. The Republicans are gambling on obstructionism & that the Democrats will be too spineless to play HARDBALL & call them out. The Republicans will try to play the victims & the Democrats can't let that happen.

I am beyond the 99 weeks, both my wife and I were let go within a week of each other for no reason. Live in Florida and within the lowest populated county. No open jobs, unless theres a opening at the local prison, if you can wk there that is. No attention for the small, rual communities that have no industry, only small family businesses. People need help. My daughter graduated from college last yr and has to baby sit to get by. The GOP has no clue and does not care. Tell them to come to the big bend area of Florida between Panama City and Tallahassee and see how people are getting by. Something must be done, and the GOP must be attacked and exsposed for who they are and their core values. They have no compassion or true morals.

Posted by Lawrence Whitfield, Bristol, Florida

UN-AMERICAN; UN-PATRIOTIC
(including BEN NELSON)

And oh by the way, was this our JOBS BILL?
As Rachael Maddow showed last night? Is this UE Benefits the extent of what is LEFT OF THE JOBS BILL?

WHY IS THIS PRESIDENT AND THE DEMS NOT EXPLAINING IT LIKE SHE DID LAST? (with diagrams and poster board)

As a 99er, I would like to know why when senators on the Ed Show are confronted with questions regarding addressing legislation for the 99ers, they dance around the subject and say really nothing at all?? The 99ers have suffered the most for the longest and for the most part are the older population. They need to help us. We vote too!!

Posted by Robin M, Orlando,Fl

Want to know why progressives get pissed, first of all your so-called financial reform is watered down garbage! Then to add insult to injury the WH INVITES SOME OF THE VERY BANKSTERS that corrupted the Politicians AND helped bring down the system TO THE BILL SIGNING CEREMONY!!!!!

Way to go Barack! And whos side are you REALLY ON?

Lots of anger. We got this way cause folks are brain dead. We listen to Foxdup. Fox can spin Dems to sound anti-people. AND it sounds true. Forty plus years of regun/thatcherism and people can't find a way to fight.

Posted by chuck san jose ca

Thank you, Ed, for continuing to fight for us. However, you made one comment on your show Tuesday July 20 that I believe plays into the hands of those on the right who try to portray those of us who are unemployed as lazy and unwilling to work. You were talking about the gentleman who has a masters degree in computer science and cannot find a job. You asked, "what is he supposed to do, take a job as a fry cook?". I too have a masters degree and have been unemployed for two years. I would gladly take a job as a fry cook. I know it was not your intent, but again I think what you said makes those on the right think they are correct when they say we don't want to work. Please keep up your fight for the 99ers and everyone else looking for work.

What are we willing to give up? By reducing our purchases(cable/eat out
driving so much) we collectively hurt megacompanies. We hurt them, they notice. Purchase from people friendly companies. Ask corporate to be value conscience. No megafarms, no too big to care about the earth. Do this and much more and we will cripple wall street. Of course, we investors will rebel.

I can not express the emotion that I feel when hearing Ed sticking up for 99ers like myself.

After all this time, and all the struggle by those that want to work and can't find a job, Ed's voice rings clear and rings loud. We are not losers, we are hard working, honest, capable and willing job seekers asking for a safety net. Not a hand out.

Thank you Ed, for speaking out for us, the 99ers. We will not forget!

Here are some long term proposals for getting America back on track. These proposals are made with the $1.4 trillion budget deficit and our growing $13 trillion national debt in mind.
1) Role back the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% permanently. These tax cuts of $1.5 trillion are totally unsustainable and unaffordable. The richest top 2% need to pay the same levels they paid in the 1990's under Clinton. I will leave it to others to say they should pay more but they must pay their fair share. The top 2% have SACRIFICED NOTHING SINCE THE WARS AFTER 9-11.

2) Raise fuel taxes that have not been raised since the 1990's. We need to get rid of imported OPEC oil permanently. Europeans pay $7 to $8 per gallon. We should AT LEAST have a federal tax floor of $4 gallon of gasoline. The world is at Peak Oil now so we may just as well start weaning ourselves off of petroleum permanently. Many energy experts say we have 40 years of oil but with China and India growing rapidly 30 years is a better figure. China now creates more carbon pollution than America.

3) We must pull all of the troops out of Iraq and later on in Afghanistan. We can not afford to spend trillions of dollars for wars while schools in Minnesota go to four day weeks and roads, bridges, water mains, and sewers are deteriorating. We must understand that we can not occupy countries any longer. The Iraq war alone will cost $3 trillion long term. It is FINANCIAL SUICIDE TO STAY IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN LONG TERM.

4) Close all tax shelters in the Caymen Islands. There are an estimated $500 billion in legally owed taxes to the federal treasury by corporations and rich Americans hiding wealth in bogus tax shelters. We all pay for these tax shelters in higher local property taxes, municipal taxes etc. because the federal government revenue sharing programs costs are being unfairly shifted to state and local governments.

5) The Defense budget of $700 billion per year is bloated beyond belief. We need to cut at least $150 to $200 billion as soon as possible. There is lots of bureaucracy and contractor positions that must be eliminated in the Defense Department. Civilian contractors must be cut drastically. Cut the deeply troubled F-35 fighter program completely and start over with something more affordable like drone robott fighter jets or manned fighter jets built jointly with our NATO allies to reduce costs. We also must look at axing unnecessary and aging nuclear missiles in Montana, Wyoming and Air Force manned bomber programs. Why have manned flight when a robot will do it more efficiently and cheaply? Read about the Predator UAV program to understand where I am coming from. There are proposals for robot F-16 fighter planes that would be much cheaper than the F-35. We may need a manned fighter in this century but the days of manned combat fighter and bomber aircraft are on a swift decline. This is a policy debate we must have.

Here is what we should invest in to help get America's economy back to work:

1) According to the Americans Society of Civil Engineers we have a backlog of over $2.2 trillion in infrastructure. This includes highways, bridges, dams, water mains, ports, sewers, commuter and mass transit infrastructure. Much of our infrastructure is over 100 years old like dams and levies in New England and California. Water mains and sewer lines are 80 to 100 years old all across America. We can not have a 21st century economy with dilapidated and deteriorating 20th century infrastructure that is falling apart. We need to spend $200 billion annually until over the next decade we can build up our infrastructure. This is an excellent jobs program.

2) We need to invest in getting our nation off of foreign oil. The government should invest in solar panels, insulation and weatherization of all buildings, and wind farms. If we stay on oil our ECONOMY WILL BE DESTROYED BY RISING OIL PRICES. We need electric hybrid and electric vehicles made by the tens of millions. 10,000 Chevy Volts is an anemic start. The federal government must buy electric vehicles for our vehicle fleets. We need more investment in electric batteries for cars and trucks. We should convert all 18 wheelers over to natural gas immediately.

3) We must eliminate our trade deficit. Two-thirds of this can be done by eliminating imported OPEC oil. We must also stick sanctions on China for manipulating its currency. China should move away from mercantile policies and develop its own domestic consumer economy.

4) We must invest in making sure all people who want to go to college get a chance to go there. We can not have a high tech society without more and more college graduates. Especially in need are more math, science, and engineering students but more liberal arts students are also very important. A highly educated workforce will be a highly productive workforce. We also need to have student loan payback programs for people involved in public service like police, teachers, social workers, case workers, and other public service jobs such as the military that already had these types of loan forgiveness programs based on years of service. Technical colleges and Community colleges need a huge investment because these are even more important than four year colleges.

5) We need to rigorously regulate our corporations and enforce antitrust laws to the letter of the law. These laws need to be reviewed and modernized. Along with this we must unionize labor more and have publicly financed elections. This will reduce the influence of corporate special interests in our election system. Public financing of elections is the only way to get our country back for middle class people.

If you have read this far than you are concerned about our country's future like I am. Our competitors in Europe and Asia are pulling ahead of us in green technology. We need to be the leader in green technology here in America. Thomas Friedman said in the book "Hot, Flat, and Crowded" that the countries that control green technology will be the countries that control the 21st century global economy. He could not be more correct. Many other journalists and scholars are saying the same thing too.

Which is better-buying an buying a car from an US company that is not made in the US or buying a car from a non-US ciompany e.g. Honda that is made in the US. I don't think I can find the type of car I want that is a US model made here. Anyone have suggestions?

Posted by Laurel Simon Portland OR

Well lets see GM is taken our tax dollars and invested in factories in China, the Japanese and So. Koreans are going to lead the world in alternatives to the internal combustion (GAS/Diesel) engine. SO, if you want offer "payback" to companies that actually are TRYING to advance electric/hybrid go with Honda or Toyota, or the Nissan Leaf.

GM is in it for their investors, they still have not learned -they need to go away. Their management is SO YESTERDAY. They had the opportunity to actually transform the auto industry for another hundred years and OWN IT, and they blew it - I call them the Goldman's of the auto industry.

Ford would be my second choice.

Posted by Good Luck

The only hope we have to end the deadlock in congress and bring about real change is to vote out all of the Republicans we can. This would not only end the deadlock but sent a message to the Democrats that the majority of the American People will not stand for a return to the indecision we have seen up to now.

Too many delays ,blocks if 99 ers get a Bill it neds to be at least one year!

Posted by jon

Thank you, Ed for taking up our cause! There has to be a desperately needed extension for us 99ers!

As a 99er for more than a month now, who spends hours every day looking for work and feeling more and more hopeless and scared, we need this safety net - just to scrape by until we find work.

I have worked for over 30 years, and am embarrased to not have a job! I think I can safely say this is not a situation any of us want to be in.

Thank you again for all you've done, Ed!

fellow 99ers I think that In fact our congress or the congress of Iran, pakistan and afganstan all have received help before fellow amerians. This premise is what is wrong with this country now. America is in a battle of elistist and the working man, in addition to the fact that our own senate turns it's back on fellow americans continuely this is about the profits of our country goning to the rich 2 percent. How heartless how could they go on break, when most 99ers are losing there homes there credit has been damaged and basically holding on just to eat by getting food stamps, if they qualify. Mr Obama how long can we wait, while you and your family are dining out in martha vineyards while
most of us are in shelters hungray. Mr president its not you fault, you have done a very creditable job but we need help and we need that executive order and pressure on the GOP NOW. Mr president from your bully pit we need forceful actions and need to expose the GOP publicly and harshly and with need to move forward with bill s3706 and also create a Federal Jobs Program to rebuild the infrastructure of this country and build the excahanges nesscary to field the new healthcare bill and create a department to evaluate resumes and place them in private and government sector jobs! Mr president you and the GOP, have yet to produce such a plan, we as americam implore you to find a way.

thank you we need S3706 and a job creations plan

Posted by Steve Bradley

I think this bill s3706 has been scripted by the democratic machine as nancy pelosi made mention that
she does not see movement until november and that date corresponds with the deadline line for existing filings for other tiers of unemployment to end. So that means that date will corespond to everybody else losing benefits again and we might just be added to a much larger bill. The GOP And Democrates are both proving heartless to the need of the average america. While aid for pakistan flows endless without check. I think we as americans need to take a hard look at this heartless senators and vote them out and get people in there, who want to get bills and circumstances reconciled without constantly goning on vacation.

Posted by francis

99ers keep the faith and apply pressure to get the Bill S3706 Passed. We need to keep the pressure on congress and the house will be in session for only 15 calenders days, I suspect that the bill won't get done till late december or the new year if we don't keep applyng pressure to the obama administration, nancy pelosi and harry reid if they want our votes then, provide us with a government that is just as quick to get relief to struggling americans as if we are in pakistan, there flood relief funds are going out without obstruction.
